The Kansas City Chiefs begin the 2012 NFL season as underdogs and they’ll be at home in Arrowhead Stadium no less. Is a surprise win in the cards for the Chiefs against Atlanta?
It may just come down to how Matt Cassel and Jamaal Charles perform after years to forget in 2011.
Cassel was disappointing last season to say the least but the Chiefs are banking on the hopes that he’ll bounce back now that he’s fully healthy.
His main targets in the passing game will be Dwayne Bowe and Jon Baldwin, while Steve Breaston and Dexter McCluster will also get their chances to shine too.
Charles, who suffered horrible leg injuries early last season, has looked solid in the preseason. Even so, Kansas City went out and got insurance by bringing Peyton Hillis on board to be the backup and goal-line back.
If Cassel and Charles stay healthy and can be reasonably productive, there’s every chance that the Chiefs will stay competitive in a notoriously weak AFC West.
There’s a lot of quality players on this defensive unit too, starting with Glenn Dorsey on the front-line and then Tamba Hali at outside linebacker. The secondary appears to be strong too, led by strong safety Eric Berry, one of the best all-around defensive players in the league. Brandon Flowers meanwhile is an extremely reliable cornerback.
The Kansas City Chiefs are the underdogs on the NFL odds board for Week 1 against Atlanta, but if they can start fast and get the crowd behind them, who knows what could happen?
It’s not like the Falcons excelled defensively last season. Kansas City should be able to move the ball pretty easily and the duo of Charles and Hillis should get plenty of work from the get-go.
Will the Chiefs start the season off right?
