Something has to change quickly for the Chiefs. They were just humbled by the Atlanta Falcons last weekend and now face two tough road games in a row.
Kansas City’s performance in Week 1 was pretty much a disaster on all fronts.
Losing 40-24, the defense was completely torn to shreds by Matt Ryan, Julio Jones, Roddy White and the rest of the Atlanta offense.
The Chiefs also had three turnovers in the loss (the Falcons had zero), all of which were on Matt Cassel. He had two interceptions and also lost a fumble in a game he’d like to soon forget.
Despite a poor effort in Week 1, Cassel remains the leader of the team and will be the difference in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills. The Bills were just embarrassed by Mark Sanchez and the New York Jets, meaning there’s every opportunity in the world for the Chiefs to rebound and do better in all phases.
There are three main playmakers on this Kansas City offense that you need to look out for.
Dwayne Bowe is the clear-cut number one receiver and continues to be a reliable outlet for Cassel in the passing game. He’s now been joined by the speedy and versatile Dexter McCluster, who led the team in receptions and yards in Week 1. Cassel had no problems looking his way and that should continue against the Bills.
However, more than anything, there should be a heavy emphasis on the run game in Week 2. Jamal Charles should get a ton of touches, and the Chiefs also have Peyton Hillis to rely on in third-down and goal-line situations.
Even though Kansas City has some nice pieces, they’re still considered the NFL odds on underdogs for this weekend’s game in Buffalo. Don’t be taken aback if the Chiefs manage to pull out a straight up win though.
