Kansas City Chiefs sign CB Sean Smith.

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed Free Agent cornerback Sean Smith (6-3, 218), from the Miami Dolphins. Negotiations with Smith’s agent began on March 9th, not long after the Chiefs signed cornerback Dunta Robinson who was released March 1st from the Atlanta Falcons. Reports have been all over the place the last couple of days on where Smith might end up. The Chiefs actually looked to be out of the running for a period of time.

Adding Sean Smith will legitimize the number 2 CB position, opposite Brandon Flowers. This signing means that Dunta Robinson will move to either nickel back or free safety.

Originally a second-round pick of the Dolphins in 2009, Smith is only 25-years-old. He’s started 56 games over the last four seasons. In 2012 he was targeted 113 times. More than any other cornerback in the league. Opposing quarterbacks completed 54.9 percent of their attempts when throwing at him, which ranked 31st in the NFL.

In 2010, Football Outsiders had Smith ranked 10th in success rate (62 percent), a stat that measures “the percentage of passes that don’t manage to get at least 45 percent of needed yards on first down, 60 percent of needed yards on second down, or 100 percent of needed yards on third down.” But in 2011, he fell to 57th (48 percent).

Smith has five career interceptions, but that number should be much higher after dropping five interceptions back in 2010. He isn’t a top-tier corner in the league, but he’s young, big, and physical. Smith will be a good counter part to a much smaller Brandon Flowers. (5-9 187)

This is by far the most entertaining off-season Chiefs fans have seen in years. Whether you agree with the signings or not, one thing is for sure, John Dorsey is making things happen at an aggressive pace. That aggressiveness bodes well for the future of this franchise.
