The NFL regular season is about to start and the first game we have for the Kansas City Chiefs is against the Jacksonville Jaguars.  The game will take place on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, FL at 1:00 PM Eastern Time.  These teams come together after having the two worst records in the 2012 season and receiving the first and second overall pick of the 2013 NFL draft.

I don’t know about any of you, but I am ready for the season to kick off and see what this new Andy Reid built team can do.  With Alex Smith at the helm of the offense I have a good feeling things will be looking up.  Well, they can’t exactly get much further down, coming off a 2–14 2012 season, so up is definitely where I, and fans, will be looking.  Smith looked very comfortable running the offense in the preseason games.  He threw 31 completions on 48 attempts for 288 yards for a 64.6% completion rate.  Though he only threw for one touchdown, it was a heck of a time to throw it, showing he can handle the pressure of bringing the team back from behind.

Smith discussed with the media his feelings on the new season with the new team.  According to ESPN Smith stated “…It’s a fresh start.  It’s a new beginning for everybody.  It’s what team is going to put in the work and take the steps necessary to get better?”  Sounds to me like he is ready for the challenge and has his mind set on being a better team for the 2013 season.  I think I can definitely rally around him and cheer him on as he leads the Chiefs.

Dwayne Bowe, who got his 5 year $65 million deal, will be a favorite target for the new QB to hit this year.  Bowe has had a lot of hype as being one of the best receivers in the league, but has lacked the QB to get him the ball and the ability to hold onto the ball when he does get thrown at.  He should have a great year in 2013 and show that his talent is true and not just a lot of talk.  Bowe didn’t get a lot of catches in the preseason, but I have a feeling he will be getting a lot more looks as he establishes himself as the target to hit.  I’m not just saying that because he is on my fantasy team, but it would definitely help out if he can hold onto the ball.  The last time these two teams met Bowe was crucial to the 42 – 20 win with his pair of touchdown catches in the game.  Lets hope a performance much the same is seen this time around.

I am pumped to see the Chiefs defense return to the field and lock down the Jaguar offense.  With returning pro-bowlers Tyson Jackson and Tamba Hali on the line and Derrick Johnson as a line backer we should be set to give them some trouble.  The secondary is my concern with the defense.  With Eric Berry out there I am sure he will make a difference, but what about the corner backs.  I was not impressed with the options in the preseason, but the regular season always seems to bring a different ferocity that is unmatched to the preseason.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are also coming off a franchise-worst 2 – 14 season in 2012.  This is more of a year to simply get better than last season according to the Jaguars coaching staff.  Gus Bradley hopes for the best from his newly acquired team and wants to be sure there is not a repeat of last season.  Unfortunately for Bradley starting quarterback Blaine Gabbert is still listed as day to day and may not be available to start the season opener for the Jaguars.  It looks like Chad Henne will be the starter and he will be put to the test by the Chiefs defense.  With top receiver Justin Blackmon out for the first 4 regular season games due to a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy Henne will be looking for Cecil Shorts to step up and be an offensive threat.  I am waiting to watch as the Chief’s secondary shuts him down.

Let’s look for a good game between these two teams with the Chiefs ending on top as we all know they should.  Join me in cheering the Chiefs on and getting that first W of the year.
