The Chiefs season has been over for a couple weeks now, and the NFL season is set to conclude a week from Sunday as the Denver Broncos take on the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII. Now it’s time to take a look at what the Chiefs could do in free agency to improve on their 11-5 campaign.
The first player I’ll take a look at, is Seattle Seahawks Wide Receiver Golden Tate.
Tate is in his fourth year out of Notre Dame. The wide receiver was selected by his current team in the 2nd Round (60th overall) in the 2010 NFL Draft. Tate is listed at 5’11, 195 lbs and is 25 years old.
Golden Tate had a very successful career at Notre Dame. After having just 6 receptions during his freshmen season, Tate had huge Sophomore and Junior seasons, totaling over 1,000 yards receiving in each season, to go along with 10 and 15 touchdowns each season, respectively. Tate hasn’t had the same kind of success in the NFL, but has shown improvement, and is a more than capable of being a quality receiver.
At times this year, the Chiefs offense struggled. And, that’s probably putting it lightly. Outside of Jamaal Charles, there really wasn’t a player at the skill positions, that defenses really had to gameplan for. Donnie Avery had a few big games, but was very inconsistent. For a majority of the season, everybody was asking “Where is Dwayne Bowe?” McGrath and Fasano had their moments, but like Avery were fairly inconsistent. And, I don’t believe Dexter McCluster is big enough to be an every down receiver.
I think Golden Tate could be the answer to some of the problems the Chiefs had on offense this season. Tate could complement Bowe very well, and just add another weapon to the offense, that defenses need to be aware of. Tate is undersized, standing under 6 feet tall, but has blazing speed. He ran a 4.36 40 yard dash, at the 2010 Combine. It would also give Alex Smith another receiver he could trust. By no means, is Tate an elite receiver. I think everyone knows that. Chiefs GM John Dorsey isn’t a believer in spending a ton of money through free agency, and the Chiefs don’t have a ton of cap room to spend freely, so don’t expect them to reel in a top tier free agent. But, I think a guy like Golden Tate makes a ton of sense for Kansas City.
